Where it came from
Alms Collector was originally introduced in the Commander 2017 set as part of the feline-themed 'Feline Ferocity' deck. Designed for the multiplayer Commander format, the card was crafted to introduce a strategic 'hatebear' element, specifically punishing opponents who attempt to gain massive card advantage through spells like Blue Sun's Zenith or Sphinx's Revelation. Its design centers on a classic white control mechanic, utilizing a replacement effect to limit card draw, a staple strategy in the color's identity for balancing board states.
The art, illustrated by Igor Kieryluk, depicts a regal, armored cat-folk figure that embodies the card's theme of collecting tribute. The aesthetic leans into the high-fantasy style established for the plane of Dominaria, where cat-folk—or Leonin—are a recurring species. Within the Commander Masters reprint, the card retains its original mechanical identity, serving as a tactical tool for players looking to suppress opponents' resources while maintaining a strong, defensive presence on the battlefield.
