Where it came from
Alms Collector was originally released in the Commander 2017 set as part of the feline-themed 'Feline Ferocity' deck. It was designed to provide white decks with a unique way to counter opponents who rely heavily on card draw, effectively acting as a reactive tax or 'hatebear' that turns an opponent's advantage into a shared benefit.
The card’s illustration by Slawomir Maniak captures the ethereal, spectral nature of the creature, emphasizing its role as an arbiter of wealth and resources. The design reflects a tactical shift in Magic: The Gathering, where white-aligned mechanics were increasingly focused on creating symmetrical effects to mitigate the card-advantage disparity often faced by mono-white commanders.
