Where it came from
Always Watching was released in 2016 as part of the Shadows over Innistrad expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set returns players to the gothic horror-themed plane of Innistrad, focusing on themes of psychological instability and divine corruption. Mechanically, the enchantment serves to bolster creature strategies, reflecting the watchful, albeit eerie, nature of Avacynian influence during a time of narrative tension in the game's lore.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a prominent artist in the Magic: The Gathering community. His design for the piece emphasizes the ethereal and imposing presence of the set's central angelic figures, utilizing a soft yet unsettling color palette to evoke a sense of constant, watchful gaze. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its efficient design and strong utility in aggressive white-aligned decks, quickly becoming a staple in the Standard format of the time.
