Where it came from
Always Watching was originally printed as a rare enchantment in the 2016 Shadows over Innistrad expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set against the backdrop of the gothic horror-themed plane of Innistrad, the card reflects the set's central narrative involving the corruption of the guardian angel Avacyn. Mechanically, it serves as a tribal anthem, reinforcing the set's focus on Human-centric strategies within a world falling into madness.
The artwork was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a celebrated artist in the fantasy gaming space known for her ethereal and detailed character work. Villeneuve chose to depict the unsettling presence of the corrupted Avacyn, capturing a sense of looming oversight that fits the card's namesake. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its efficiency in aggressive deck archetypes, quickly becoming a staple in the Standard environment of the era.
