Where it came from
Amateur Auteur is a card from the 2017 Magic: The Gathering set Unstable, which was the third entry in Wizards of the Coast's 'Un-set' series. These sets were intentionally designed for casual, silver-bordered play, prioritizing humor and experimental mechanics that would not be viable within the standard competitive framework. The set was conceived by head designer Mark Rosewater to push the boundaries of game rules while celebrating the whimsy of the hobby.
The card features art by Aleksi Briclot, a prolific illustrator known for his work on numerous Magic sets. The design plays on the trope of an aspiring filmmaker, utilizing a mechanic that allows players to create 'film' tokens, mirroring the set's broader theme of meta-commentary and creative expression. Upon release, the card was well-received by fans of the Unstable draft environment for its interactive potential and thematic commitment to the 'filmmaking' aesthetic.
