Ambition's Cost

Ambition's Cost was introduced in the 2022 expansion Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate, a set designed specifically for the Commander multiplayer format. The card functions as a reprint of a classic black spell, serving as a staple utility piece that allows players to draw cards at the expense of their life total, reflecting the high-risk, high-reward philosophy associated with black mana in the game's color identity.

The artwork for this version was illustrated by Jason Rainville, who leaned into the dark, opportunistic themes of the Dungeons & Dragons setting. The design seeks to visually capture the thematic toll of seeking power, a recurring motif in both the tabletop roleplaying game and the Magic: The Gathering card mechanics. It was received by players as a functional and appropriately flavored addition to the set, providing essential card draw for deck archetypes that sacrifice health for resources.
