Where it came from
Ambition's Cost was included in the Vampiric Bloodline deck for the Commander 2017 release. This set was designed to emphasize tribal synergies, allowing players to build cohesive decks centered around specific creature types. The card itself serves as a functional reprint of an earlier staple, providing a staple draw engine specifically tuned for the black color identity, which often requires life payment to access card advantage.
The artwork for this particular printing was illustrated by Igor Kieryluk, who captures the somber and gothic aesthetic characteristic of the Innistrad-adjacent flavor often associated with vampire-themed decks. The design intent was to provide Commander players with reliable utility in the late game. It is recognized by collectors as a versatile, if utilitarian, piece that supports the mechanics of graveyard-focused or black-aligned strategies.
