Where it came from
Ambition's Cost was included in the March of the Machine Commander set released by Wizards of the Coast in 2023. This card acts as a functional reprint of a classic black sorcery, designed to provide card advantage at the expense of life, a core mechanical theme within the color identity of black in Magic: The Gathering. Its inclusion in these preconstructed decks was intended to provide players with accessible, efficient utility cards that support the draw-heavy requirements of the Commander format.
The artwork for this specific printing was produced by illustrator Andrew Mar. The visual direction focuses on the dark, transactional nature of the spell, depicting a character engaging in a pact or sacrifice to gain forbidden knowledge or power. As a staple utility spell, the card was received as a reliable, if familiar, inclusion for players looking to refine their deck's consistency and resource management.
