Where it came from
Ambitious Farmhand // Seasoned Cathar was originally introduced in the 2021 set Innistrad: Midnight Hunt and was later featured in the 2025 release Innistrad Remastered. The card represents the narrative arc of a common citizen joining the ranks of the church’s defenders during a period of perpetual darkness. As a double-faced card, it mechanically reflects the transformation from an earnest laborer into an experienced soldier, a design motif central to the horror-themed setting of Innistrad.
The card was illustrated by Chris Rahn, whose work captures the gothic atmosphere of the plane. His design emphasizes the transition from the muted, weary tones of farm life to the structured, resolute appearance of a cathar. Within the game, the card is recognized for its utility in limited formats, where it provides a reliable means of smoothing out mana bases while offering a mid-game defensive presence that resonates with the set's focus on human survival.
