Ambitious Farmhand // Seasoned Cathar

Ambitious Farmhand // Seasoned Cathar was released in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering expansion, Innistrad: Midnight Hunt. The card reflects the set's central design mechanic, double-faced cards, which represent the transformation of characters or creatures under the influence of the plane's gothic horror setting. This specific card illustrates the transition from a humble, vulnerable laborer to a hardened soldier, mirroring the lore of Innistrad where ordinary citizens are forced into combat against supernatural threats.

The artwork was produced by artist Manuel Castañón, whose contribution fits into the set’s earthy, autumnal aesthetic. The design focuses on the duality of human resilience, providing a mechanical utility that allows the card to fetch basic land cards before flipping into a more powerful form once a specific condition is met. Upon release, it was received as a solid utility piece for limited formats and white-aligned aggressive decks, appreciated for its efficiency in maintaining land parity while offering a combat-relevant threat in the mid-to-late game.
