Where it came from
The Ambling Stormshell was released as part of the Dragonstorm promotional set for the Magic: The Gathering expansion Khans of Tarkir. This specific card was distributed as a participation reward or prize for local game store events, reflecting the set's thematic focus on the shifting, dragon-dominated timelines of the Tarkir plane. Its inclusion in the promotional series served to highlight the game's creature-heavy mechanics and the set's unique aesthetic.
The card features artwork by Johann Bodin, who utilized the set's distinct visual language to depict the creature's bulky, protective form. The design leans into the 'morph' mechanic central to the expansion, emphasizing the creature's durability and biological synthesis. Upon its release, it was regarded by the player base as a solid limited-format utility, valued primarily for its functional role in recurring key cards from the graveyard to the hand.
