Where it came from
Surrak, Elusive Hunter was released in 2015 as part of the Tarkir: Dragonstorm promotional set for Magic: The Gathering. The card was distributed as a participation reward for the Dragon of Tarkir Prerelease events, serving as a foil alternative-art version of the character Surrak the Hunt Caller. This promotional release was designed to celebrate the conclusion of the Khans of Tarkir block, a narrative arc centered on the struggle between historical clans and the draconic timelines of an alternate reality.
The card features distinct artwork by Wesley Burt, who opted for a dynamic, immersive perspective that emphasizes Surrak’s role as a legendary ranger stalking through the dense, snow-covered forests of his home plane. The design focuses on his connection to the wilderness and his tactical prowess, fitting the green-aligned creature’s 'formidable' mechanic. Upon its release, it was well-received by players and collectors alike for its unique visual aesthetic, which differentiated it from the standard core set printings and solidified its status as a staple for fans of the Tarkir setting.
