Anaconda

Its inclusion in the Ninth Edition core set, released in 2005, marked a transition period for the game, as Wizards of the Coast moved to standardize the visual presentation of core sets by utilizing art previously seen in the Invasion block. This reprinting served to maintain the presence of conditional land-walk creatures in the standard environment, providing green decks with a specialized tool for overcoming black-aligned defensive strategies.

The artwork for the Ninth Edition printing was produced by artist Christopher Rush, a foundational figure in the aesthetic development of Magic: The Gathering. Rush's illustration style for this piece leans into the classic, high-contrast fantasy aesthetic common in the late 1990s, focusing on an intimidating, coiled predator to visually communicate the card's Swampwalk keyword. While the card is generally viewed as a functional piece of limited play history rather than a centerpiece of set design, it remains a notable example of the transitional art curation that defined the middle era of the game's core sets.
