Provenance

Where it came from

The Sengir Vampire first appeared in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as part of the game's initial roster of creatures. The creature was conceived as a quintessential gothic horror archetype, balancing a high casting cost with a powerful ability that allowed it to grow stronger by defeating other creatures in combat. It quickly became an iconic staple of the early game's aesthetic, representing the dark fantasy themes that defined the brand's identity.

The artwork for the Ninth Edition version, featuring the vampire's signature brooding posture, was illustrated by Kev Walker. Walker, a long-time contributor to the game, aimed to modernize the classic look of the vampire while maintaining the sinister, aristocratic menace established by earlier artists. The Ninth Edition printing was part of the 2005 core set, which sought to bring foundational cards into a contemporary frame layout for new and returning players.
