Where it came from
Ancient Craving was first released as part of the Commander 2015 set, a supplemental release for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game designed specifically for the multiplayer Commander format. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set focused on two-color decks featuring experience counters and new legendary creatures, aimed at providing players with ready-to-play options that balanced complex mechanics with established card archetypes.
The card's illustration was created by artist Mathias Kollros, who has contributed extensively to the visual language of the game. The art portrays the card's function as a black-aligned draw spell, capturing the theme of sacrificing life force to obtain knowledge or power. It was received as a functional, straightforward staple for black-inclusive Commander decks, valued for its efficient card advantage despite the drawback of life loss.
