Where it came from
Ancient Craving, a black sorcery card featured in the Jumpstart 2022 expansion, serves as a functional reprint of a classic Magic: The Gathering effect. Originally introduced in the Portal Second Age set, the card allows a player to draw three cards while losing three life, embodying the quintessential black mana philosophy of gaining power at the cost of one's own vitality. Its inclusion in Jumpstart 2022 was intended to provide accessible card advantage tools for the set's unique, randomized deck-building format.
The artwork for this version was commissioned to fit the aesthetic continuity of the Jumpstart 2022 product line, which emphasizes vibrant, thematic cohesion. While the mechanical design remains a staple of the color pie, this specific printing serves as a utility piece for players navigating the high-speed, limited-environment playstyle encouraged by the set. It remains a recognizable part of the game's broader lexicon of card-draw spells.
