Where it came from
Sandstone Oracle was released in 2015 as part of the Commander 2015 set, a series of preconstructed decks designed specifically for the multiplayer Magic: The Gathering format. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set focused on the theme of experience counters and dual-colored commanders, aiming to provide strategic utility for players navigating complex board states. The card itself functions as a high-cost artifact creature intended to provide card advantage to players who find themselves trailing in hand size.
The artwork for the card was provided by illustrator Daniel Ljunggren. His design visualizes the Oracle as a towering, constructed entity, emphasizing a sense of ancient, weathered stability that aligns with the card's mechanics and the flavor of the set's artifacts. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the Commander community for its ability to stabilize a player's position in longer games, becoming a staple inclusion in casual decks that prioritize mana ramp and resource replenishment.
