Ancient Den

Ancient Den was originally introduced in the 2003 expansion Mirrodin, designed as part of a cycle of artifact lands. These lands were conceived to integrate seamlessly into the block's artifact-heavy mechanical theme, providing both mana acceleration and synergy for cards that cared about the number of artifacts on the battlefield. The original illustration by Rob Alexander portrayed the location as a crystalline, structured sanctuary, reflecting the metallic and artificial landscape of the plane of Mirrodin.

The version from Commander 2021, featuring collector number 276, was released as part of a preconstructed deck product. This printing utilized updated art by Titus Lunter, who opted for a more panoramic and atmospheric depiction of the site. While the card remains a staple in artifact-focused Commander decks due to its versatility and utility, its power level has historically necessitated bans in certain competitive formats, such as Modern, where its ability to function as an artifact under restrictive conditions proved too efficient.
