Where it came from
Incubation // Incongruity is a split card first introduced in the Ravnica Allegiance expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 2019, later reprinted in the Commander 2021 set. It represents the color philosophy of the Simic Combine, a faction within the Ravnica setting dedicated to biological experimentation and evolution. The design allows players to choose between the versatility of searching for a creature card or the reactive utility of removing an opponent's threat, reflecting the faction's focus on both growth and modification.
The card features artwork by Anna Steinbauer, who was tasked with visualizing the dual nature of Simic magic. The Incubation side depicts the careful monitoring of life forms in incubation tanks, while the Incongruity side illustrates the chaotic and often surreal results of their genetic meddling. The card was well-received by players for its efficiency in decks that utilize green and blue mana, becoming a staple in Commander formats where flexible spells are highly valued for maintaining board control.
