Throne of Bone

Throne of Bone was originally introduced during the early years of Magic: The Gathering as part of the core game mechanics, appearing in the Alpha set in 1993. It was designed as an artifact that allows players to gain life whenever a black spell is cast, serving as a reactive counter-strategy against decks focused on black mana. The card reflects the game's initial design philosophy of providing universal tools that could be utilized by any deck to mitigate specific color-based threats.

The Seventh Edition printing, released in 2001, features updated artwork by artist Ian Miller. Known for his intricate and surreal style, Miller’s illustration depicts the titular bone-crafted throne with a haunting, gothic sensibility that fits the macabre theme of the card. Seventh Edition was a significant milestone for the game as the first core set to feature a modern card frame, and Miller’s contribution helped transition these classic, early-era cards into the visual aesthetic of the new millennium.
