Provenance

Where it came from

The 'Angel // Demon' double-faced token was released as part of the 'Open the Helvault' event kit, a promotional campaign tied to the 2012 Magic: The Gathering set Avacyn Restored. The set focused on the narrative of the archangel Avacyn escaping her imprisonment within the Helvault, a massive silver monolith. This token was designed to represent the two opposing forces of the narrative, serving as a physical manifestation of the set's central conflict between light and dark.

The card features artwork by Magali Villeneuve, a celebrated illustrator in the fantasy gaming space known for her evocative character portraits. Her design emphasizes the juxtaposition between the ethereal, protective presence of the Angel and the menacing, volatile nature of the Demon. The piece was well-received by the player community for its high-quality finish and its functional utility in a set where players frequently created these creature types during gameplay.
