Where it came from
The Angel token from the Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty Commander set was released in 2022 as part of the broader Neon Dynasty expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set marked a return to the fan-favorite plane of Kamigawa, reimagined through a lens of cyberpunk aesthetics, neon-drenched cityscapes, and advanced technology. The token was designed to represent the Angel creature type summoned by specific cards within the Commander decks, serving as a visual touchstone for the set's unique blend of traditional Shinto-inspired folklore and futuristic high-tech imagery.
The artistic direction for the Neon Dynasty tokens was heavily influenced by the set's overarching theme of conflict between nature and machine. Like other tokens in the set, the Angel was crafted to feature distinct, vibrant color palettes and sleek line work that mirrored the high-fantasy-meets-cyberpunk ethos of the main expansion. It was received by players as a functional and stylish accessory, appreciated for its cohesive design that aligned perfectly with the aesthetic overhaul of the Kamigawa setting compared to its original 2004 debut.
