Where it came from
Avacyn, Angel of Hope was originally introduced in the 2012 Magic: The Gathering expansion Avacyn Restored. This specific version, identified as number 6 in the Open the Helvault promotional set, was released as part of a massive real-world event held at Prerelease tournaments. Players gathered to collectively open a giant physical prop of the Helvault, a mystical prison from the game's lore, to reveal these special promo cards inside.
The card was illustrated by Jason Chan, who depicted the archangel in a protective, commanding stance that emphasizes her role as a guardian of humanity on the plane of Innistrad. The design features a unique frame treatment distinct from the standard card release, reflecting the high-stakes narrative of the set where Avacyn's liberation was the primary focal point of the story. It remains a hallmark of the gothic horror aesthetic that defines the Innistrad block.
