Provenance

Where it came from

The Angel of Deliverance was released in 2016 as part of the Shadows over Innistrad expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This specific version is a promotional card, issued as a reward for participants in the prerelease events held at local game stores. The set marked a return to the gothic horror-themed plane of Innistrad, focusing on the corruption of angelic entities by the Eldrazi titan Emrakul.

The card features artwork by Cynthia Sheppard, who was tasked with depicting the figure in a state of corrupted, twisted grace to match the set's narrative of cosmic dread. The design emphasizes the duality of the angel's celestial origins contrasted with the unsettling, otherworldly influence of the Eldrazi. Upon its release, players noted the card's distinctive visual departure from traditional high-fantasy angelic iconography, favoring a more distorted and eerie aesthetic.
