Where it came from
The Angel of Deliverance was released as a promotional card for the Magic: The Gathering set Shadows over Innistrad in 2016. It features alternative artwork by Igor Kieryluk, who rendered the card in the gothic horror aesthetic that defines the Innistrad plane. This specific version was distributed as a participation reward for the set's prerelease events, serving as a thematic highlight for the expansion's focus on mystery and corruption.
The card was designed to function as a powerful, late-game control piece, utilizing the 'delirium' mechanic—a key feature of the set that rewards players for having diverse card types in their graveyard. Kieryluk’s illustration emphasizes the ethereal, spectral nature of the angel, contrasting light against the dark, moody landscapes typical of the plane. It was well-received by players for its balance of gameplay utility and the high-fantasy artistry that has become a hallmark of the game's long-running aesthetic tradition.
