Provenance

Where it came from

The Angel of Deliverance was released in 2016 as part of the Shadows over Innistrad expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set returned players to the gothic horror plane of Innistrad, focusing on themes of madness and corruption. Within the game's lore, the angel represents the desperate hope of the populace as their protectors begin to turn against them due to the influence of the Eldrazi titan Emrakul.

The artwork was commissioned from artist Igor Kieryluk, who sought to capture the character's imposing and ethereal presence. The design emphasizes the classic aesthetic of Innistrad's angels—haughty, powerful, and armored—while incorporating subtle, haunting elements consistent with the set's narrative of encroaching darkness. It was received as a flavorful addition to the set, effectively communicating the visual language of a plane descending into chaos.
