Where it came from
The Angel of Invention was introduced as part of the Kaladesh expansion in 2016, a set themed around a vibrant, invention-focused plane inspired by steampunk and Indian aesthetics. This particular iteration was released as a promotional card, distinguished by its unique 4s collector number and alternate frame treatment. It serves as a narrative anchor for the set, representing the creative spirit of the Consulate’s inventors who utilized Aether to power their marvels, aligning with the block's emphasis on artifact synergy and modular design.
The card's artwork, illustrated by Greg Staples, captures the ethereal yet metallic quality of the creature, emphasizing the blend of divine grace and construct engineering central to the Kaladesh aesthetic. The design team focused on creating a versatile creature that could bolster a battlefield with its anthem effect or manufacture tokens, making it a staple in white-based midrange and token strategies. Upon release, it was well-received by players for its efficiency and ability to adapt to varying board states, becoming a recognizable figure of the set's high-fantasy industrial motif.
