Where it came from
The Toolcraft Exemplar was released as part of the Kaladesh set for Magic: The Gathering in 2016, a collection heavily inspired by steampunk aesthetics and the concept of magical invention. This specific iteration is a promotional version, distributed through the game's organized play channels to incentivize participation in local hobby shop events. It serves as a mechanical centerpiece for aggressive artifact-focused decks, reflecting the set's core design philosophy of synergy between creatures and mechanical contraptions.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a prominent artist within the game's community known for his expressive, light-filled compositions. Voss sought to capture the ingenuity and craftsmanship central to the lore of Kaladesh, depicting a young artisan surrounded by their creations. Upon release, the card was well-received by competitive players for its efficiency and power level, quickly becoming a staple in high-tier tournament play during its time in the active rotation.
