Where it came from
Eliminate the Competition was released as a promotional card for the Kaladesh set of Magic: The Gathering, which debuted in late 2016. The set was centered on an optimistic, steampunk-inspired plane called Kaladesh, where invention and creativity are highly valued. This specific card was distributed through Wizards of the Coast’s Buy-a-Box program, an incentive strategy designed to encourage players to purchase full booster boxes from local game stores during the expansion's launch period.
The card’s artwork was illustrated by Daarken, a veteran artist known for his dark and visceral style within the fantasy genre. In designing this card, the intent was to evoke the ruthless industrial efficiency of the Consulate, the ruling body on Kaladesh. While the base game’s aesthetic was vibrant and bright, the promo version provided a stylized, punchy alternative to the standard art, helping it stand out as a collectible piece for those invested in the high-stakes political themes of the set.
