Provenance

Where it came from

Anger was released in 2002 as part of the Judgment expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the Judgment set was designed to complete the Odyssey block, which focused heavily on graveyard interactions and mechanics that rewarded players for having cards in their discard piles. The card Anger specifically serves as an 'Incarnation,' a cycle of creatures that provide global static abilities to players who control them, provided the creature card is located in the player's graveyard.

The card features artwork by the illustrator Arnie Swekel, who provided a visceral depiction of a burning, elemental entity to match the card's theme of haste and aggression. Upon its release, Anger was well-received by the competitive community for its utility in red-based deck strategies, particularly because it allowed players to grant haste to their creatures directly from the graveyard. It remains a foundational card for strategies involving self-mill and graveyard recursion in the game's various constructed formats.
