Where it came from
Animar, Soul of Elements was introduced as a legendary creature in the inaugural Commander product line released by Wizards of the Coast in 2011. This specific iteration is an oversized card, designed to serve as a visual centerpiece for players leading their decks in the multiplayer Commander format. The character represents an elemental entity composed of the raw forces of nature, reflecting the multicolored design philosophy central to the set's focus on three-color legendary creatures.
The art was commissioned from illustrator Jason Chan, who developed a sweeping, ethereal aesthetic that emphasizes the creature's fluidity and lack of a fixed physical form. Chan's design aimed to convey the mechanical concept of the card—which grows stronger as the player casts more creatures—by imbuing the figure with a sense of expansion and elemental accumulation. Upon release, the card was widely received as a cornerstone of the Simic and Temur color identities, remaining a favorite among players who favor creature-heavy strategies.
