Where it came from
Animar, Soul of Elements first appeared in the 2011 Magic: The Gathering Commander set. As a mythic rare legendary elemental, it was designed to serve as a powerful commander for decks focusing on creature-based synergies, specifically those utilizing +1/+1 counters and reducing the casting costs of creature spells. Its presence in the Masters 25 set in 2018 marked a significant return, reprinting the card with updated frame technology for a set curated to celebrate the game's quarter-century history.
The artwork for this particular iteration was handled by Chase Stone, who captured the elemental's ethereal, shifting form. The design seeks to convey the fluidity of nature and magic, emphasizing the creature's ability to grow in strength as it interacts with the board state. Upon its initial release and subsequent reprints, Animar gained a reputation in the Commander format as a high-tier threat, widely appreciated by players for its combo potential and resilience against traditional removal.
