Where it came from
Animar, Soul of Elements first appeared in the 2011 Magic: The Gathering Commander product line, specifically as the face of the Devour for Power deck. Designed to capitalize on the rising popularity of the Commander format, the card introduced a unique mechanics-based synergy that rewards players for casting creature spells by accumulating +1/+1 counters, which in turn reduce the cost of future creature spells. This design allows for explosive board states, firmly establishing the character as a fan-favorite legend among players who enjoy elemental and tribal synergies.
The 2022 Double Masters version, identified by collector number 470, features an updated aesthetic that highlights the character's ethereal and shifting form. By reimagining the original design, this reprint was intended for a premium set, offering players a stylized, high-contrast illustration that leans into the elemental, multi-colored nature of the soul of the elements. It remains a hallmark of the set's commitment to reissuing high-demand Commander staples with polished, contemporary art.
