Animate Wall

Animate Wall was released as part of the International Collectors' Edition (ICE) in 1993, a boxed set produced by Wizards of the Coast to introduce the card game Magic: The Gathering to international markets. Unlike standard sets, the cards in this edition feature a distinct gold-bordered design and a non-standard card back, intended to prevent them from being mixed into competitive tournament decks of the era. The set functioned as a curated anthology of cards from the game's earliest expansions, providing players outside of North America with access to foundational mechanics and art.

The card features artwork by Christopher Rush, one of the most prominent early contributors to the game’s visual identity. His illustration for Animate Wall reflects the dark, high-fantasy aesthetic that defined the initial core set, focusing on the literal transformation of static masonry into a defensive, sentient combatant. While Animate Wall itself is often cited for its niche utility within the game's ruleset, the International Collectors' Edition as a whole is highly regarded by historians of the medium for its role in the global expansion of the hobby and its unique place in the history of card printing.
