Where it came from
The Anthem of Champions card was released as part of the 1990 Marvel Universe Series 1 trading card set, produced by Impel. This collection represented a landmark moment in the hobby, as it was one of the first mass-produced sets dedicated specifically to the Marvel Comics pantheon. The card was designed to function as a thematic centerpiece for the series, utilizing vibrant, high-energy artwork that captured the grand scale of the Marvel narrative during the late eighties and early nineties.
The design aesthetic prioritized a bold, illustrative approach consistent with the era's comic book sensibilities. Artists working on the set aimed to synthesize the vast breadth of the Marvel multiverse into singular, collectible snapshots. Upon its release, the set was met with immense enthusiasm from comic readers and collectors alike, effectively bridging the gap between serialized storytelling and the burgeoning secondary market for non-sports trading cards.
