Where it came from
Appetite for Brains was first introduced in the Avacyn Restored set in 2012, designed as a black sorcery meant to disrupt an opponent's strategy by exiling a high-cost card from their hand. The card reflects the gothic horror theme of the Innistrad block, focusing on the flavor of the undead scavenging for cognitive resources, which fits the set's narrative of a world under siege by supernatural threats.
The version from Ultimate Masters, released in 2018, features updated card frame technology while retaining the original illustration by Volkan Baga. Baga is a frequent contributor to Magic: The Gathering, known for his ability to render dark, atmospheric fantasy scenes. This specific printing was well-received by players for its inclusion in a set curated to provide high-value reprints and staples for various competitive formats.
