Where it came from
Approach of the Second Sun was originally introduced in the 2017 Amonkhet set for Magic: The Gathering. Designed as a win-condition card, it reflects the block's Egyptian-inspired themes of divine prophecy and cyclical time. The card was created to provide a unique alternative victory condition, requiring players to survive long enough to cast the powerful sorcery twice, which captured the thematic essence of awaiting a cataclysmic or auspicious event.
The 2021 Pioneer Challenger Deck release featured this specific printing to provide newer or budget-conscious players with a viable entry point into competitive play. The card's artwork, by Noah Bradley, emphasizes the grandeur and looming dread of the desert landscape. While the card is often viewed as a polarizing design due to its unconventional path to victory, it remains a staple in control-oriented archetypes, appreciated for its clear and thematic win mechanic.
