Where it came from
Approach of the Second Sun was first released in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering expansion Amonkhet. Designed as a rare sorcery, the card functions as an alternative win condition, requiring a player to cast it twice to win the game instantly. The design team sought to capture the apocalyptic flavor of the set's Egyptian-inspired plane, where the arrival of the second sun signals the return of the god-pharaoh Nicol Bolas and the resulting cataclysm.
The promotional version, designated with collector number 4s, features unique borderless or alternate-frame aesthetics common to the Amonkhet Prerelease and promotional offerings of that era. Illustrated by Noah Bradley, the artwork emphasizes the immense scale of the monument and the ominous celestial alignment central to the plane's lore. The card was well-received by players for its tension-filled gameplay and its ability to serve as a centerpiece for control-oriented deck archetypes.
