Provenance

Where it came from

The Aquamoeba card was originally released as part of the Torment expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game in 2002, before being reprinted in the 2003 World Championship Decks. The 2003 World Championship series was a unique product line that recreated the exact 60-card decks played by the top competitors at that year's world tournament, allowing players to own and play with professional-level strategies. These decks were printed with a special gold border and facsimile signatures of the players to distinguish them from standard-issue cards.

The design of Aquamoeba, illustrated by artist Greg Staples, reflects the gothic and dark themes pervasive in the Torment set. Staples utilized a moody, atmospheric style to depict the creature as a fluid, shape-shifting entity suited for blue-aligned decks. Within the professional meta-game of 2003, the card was valued for its utility in graveyard-focused strategies, serving as both a defensive presence and a way to discard cards to manipulate the game state.
