Where it came from
The 2003 World Championship Decks were a series of four pre-constructed sets released by Wizards of the Coast, designed to replicate the exact card lists used by the top-performing players at the 2003 Magic: The Gathering World Championships. These products allowed collectors and players to own gold-bordered, non-tournament-legal reproductions of the powerful decks that dominated the professional circuit that year, serving as both a memento of the competitive meta and a study tool for aspiring players.
The Island card featured in these decks uses the original illustration by Rob Alexander, a prolific artist whose landscapes became a cornerstone of the game's early visual identity. Alexander focused on creating a serene, immersive depiction of a coastal environment, employing a watercolor-influenced aesthetic that emphasized natural lighting and tranquil horizons. Because these cards were reprints of high-level tournament staples, the set remains highly regarded among enthusiasts for preserving a specific snapshot of mid-2000s competitive play.
