Where it came from
Ardent Militia was released in 1997 as part of the Weatherlight expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set during the height of the game's early narrative arcs, the card depicts the armored forces of the Benalish regions, serving as a tactical representation of defensive infantry within the game's mechanics. Its creation reflected the set's focus on the crew of the skyship Weatherlight and the diverse cultures of the plane of Dominaria.
The card’s illustration was provided by artist Susan Van Camp, who contributed several pieces to the set during this era of Magic's aesthetic development. Van Camp’s style captured the rigid, uniform appearance of the Benalish soldiers, utilizing the traditional fantasy art approach common to mid-nineties trading cards. While the card is a standard common-rarity defensive unit, it remains a nostalgic piece for those who collected the Weatherlight expansion for its sweeping, multi-chapter storyline.
