Where it came from
The Ardent Militia card was released in 1997 as part of the Portal set, a standalone product designed by Wizards of the Coast to serve as an accessible entry point for new Magic: The Gathering players. The set introduced simplified mechanics and a streamlined rules engine that removed phases like upkeep and mana burn to lower the barrier to entry for beginners, marking a departure from the complex systems present in the core expansions of the mid-1990s.
The illustration for Ardent Militia was created by artist Jeff Miracola, who captured the stoic, disciplined aesthetic intended for the White color alignment in the game. While the card itself was received by veteran players as a basic, straightforward creature with a mana cost of five, its role within the Portal design framework was crucial for teaching fundamental concepts like creature combat and turn structure to those unfamiliar with the trading card game hobby.
