Provenance

Where it came from

Armageddon first appeared in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield to be a high-impact white sorcery capable of resetting the board state. By the time it was included in the Fifth Edition core set, the card had already cemented its reputation as a polarizing staple of competitive play. Its design, which destroys all lands in play, was intended to punish players who overextended their resources, forcing a brutal tactical reset that often decided the outcome of a match.

The Fifth Edition version featured the iconic, stark illustration by Melissa Benson. Her work on this piece is celebrated for its evocative depiction of a crumbling landscape, which captures the cataclysmic flavor of the spell perfectly. During the Fifth Edition print run, the game was shifting toward a more standardized aesthetic, and Benson’s contribution remains a standout example of the atmospheric, hand-painted art style that defined the early years of the trading card game.
