Provenance

Where it came from

Armageddon first appeared in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield to be a high-impact white sorcery capable of resetting the board state by destroying all lands. The card’s function reflected the game's early philosophy of creating dramatic, game-altering moments, quickly becoming a staple of aggressive white strategies that sought to neutralize an opponent's resources once a lead had been established.

The version from the Masters 25 set, released in 2018 to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the game, features illustration by Kev Walker. Walker’s depiction leans into the card's apocalyptic namesake, emphasizing the scale of destruction through intense lighting and visceral imagery. This reprinting was intended to provide players with a modern, high-quality frame for a classic effect that remains a controversial yet iconic piece of Magic's historical mechanics.
