Island

The Fourth Edition Island, specifically card number 369, was released by Wizards of the Coast in 1995 as part of the game's first core set to be sold worldwide with standardized art. This set served to consolidate the early, fractured releases of the game into a unified base set, making the iconic basic land types more accessible to a growing international audience. The design reflects the transition period of the game, where the aesthetic began to shift toward a more consistent visual language intended to define the identity of Magic: The Gathering for years to come.

The illustration for this particular Island was created by Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and celebrated artists from the game's earliest era. Rush was known for his ability to capture the elemental essence of nature through a distinctively atmospheric lens, and his take on the Island became a fundamental component of the game's imagery. His work was well-received by players for its balance of simplicity and mood, helping to cement the classic visual style that remains synonymous with the game's vintage foundational cards.
