Armistice

Armistice was released in 1999 as part of the Mercadian Masques expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set on the plane of Mercadia, the expansion introduced themes of political maneuvering, trade, and corporate-like guilds, departing from the high-fantasy tropes of preceding sets. The card was designed to reflect this political climate, offering a mechanical representation of a temporary peace treaty where players could exchange life points for card advantage, mirroring the opportunistic nature of the set's setting.

The artwork was commissioned from Dan Frazier, one of the original artists involved in the game’s inception. Frazier’s illustration style, which often leans toward clean lines and symbolic representation, depicts a formal, balanced scene that fits the card’s thematic function as a diplomatic tool. While the card is not considered a competitive staple, it remains a notable example of the game's attempt to integrate flavor-heavy, top-down design into its mechanical structure during the late 1990s.
