Where it came from
Armory Automaton was released in 2016 as part of the Commander 2016 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed to showcase four-color legendary commanders, with this specific card appearing in the Invent Superiority deck. The design team created this artifact creature to support equipment-themed strategies, providing a unique way for players to attach disparate equipment cards to a single permanent, which mirrors the mechanical focus of the Breya, Etherium Shaper deck it accompanied.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a frequent contributor to the game whose work is noted for its clean lines and evocative lighting. In this piece, Voss depicts the automaton as a complex, multi-armed construct designed to manage a vast arsenal, effectively capturing the card's function as a utility piece for board state consolidation. Upon release, the card was well-received by the Commander community for its strategic utility in 'Voltron' style decks, where players look to stack numerous artifacts onto one creature to overwhelm opponents.
