Where it came from
Arms Race was released in November 2022 as part of The Brothers' War, a Magic: The Gathering expansion set that revisited the iconic conflict between brothers Urza and Mishra. The card depicts the escalating technological warfare central to the set's narrative, where both sides raced to develop increasingly powerful mechanical constructs and artifacts to achieve dominance over the plane of Dominaria.
The artwork, illustrated by Games Workshop collaborator and fantasy artist Anna Steinbauer, captures the frantic and industrial atmosphere of the conflict. By focusing on the mechanical mobilization, the design complements the set's broader mechanical focus on artifacts and large-scale manufacturing, reflecting the desperate technological competition that eventually led to the cataclysmic events of the Brothers' War storyline.
