Where it came from
Ambush Paratrooper was released in 2022 as part of The Brothers' War, a Magic: The Gathering expansion set that revisits the conflict between the artificers Urza and Mishra. The card depicts a soldier fighting for the Coalition, the faction resisting the mechanical horrors of the Phyrexians. Its design reflects the set's central theme of artifact warfare, providing players with a white-aligned creature that utilizes the 'soldier' tribal synergy established throughout the expansion's lore.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, whose work frequently features in the game's high-fantasy aesthetic. Voss designed the paratrooper to capture the desperate, high-stakes nature of the battlefield, emphasizing the verticality of aerial combat against the grounded machinery of the era. Within the set, the card served as a functional 'common' rarity utility piece, intended to provide strategic flexibility for limited play formats like Draft and Sealed.
