Where it came from
Army of the Damned originated as a reprint in the 2021 Midnight Hunt Commander set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Originally debuting in the 2011 Innistrad set, the card was designed to embody the gothic horror themes of the plane, specifically focusing on the graveyard-centric mechanics of zombie tribal decks. It serves as a high-mana value sorcery that generates a massive board presence by creating thirteen tapped 2/2 black zombie creature tokens, reinforcing the set's focus on undead synergy.
The illustrative work captures the grim, macabre aesthetic central to the Innistrad narrative. By depicting a swarming legion of the undead rising from the earth, the artwork aligns with the game's broader design goal of providing players with 'splashy' effects that feel impactful within the Commander format. It remains a staple in graveyard-focused decks, highly regarded for its ability to turn the tide of a game despite its significant casting cost.
